Full-surface gluing of planks onto the subfloor

This type of installation is recommended for commercial environments, on heating screed, and also for difficult installations (e.g. connection with tiles, tiled stoves etc.). On heating screed the planks should be glued in order to achieve the lowest possible thermal resistance. The subfloor must be tested for suitability before installation begins (cross-scratch test, dryness of screed – for cement screed a maximum of 1,8 %, for anhydrite screed a maximum of approx. 0,3 % residual moisture according to manufacturer´s guidelines).

For gluing we recommend elastic adhesives (polyurethane or polymer adhesives) classified as “very low emission” according to EMICODE EC 1 classification in order to avoid harmful emissions.

Expansion joints, 4 to 5 mm wide, in the screed must be applied likewise to the planks during installation. These joints should be sealed with a mastic parquet sealant in a matching colour. It is not necessary to additionally apply glue to the tongue and groove. (This could result in tear and breakage.) Boards below 1500 mm should definitely be glued. Edge distances of 6-10 mm should be provided when gluing the boards.

In all types of installation please use the tapping block on the tongue, not on the top layer, in order to avoid chipping.

As adhesive we recommend: Uzin MK 100, MK 95, MK 92 S, MK 200


Installation is always carried out by gluing on load-bearing subflooring (cement or anhydrite screed, chipboard or plywood) using a suitable adhesive. A particularly suitable adhesive is Adhesive for Parquet. The subfloor must meet the standard requirements with regard to surface evenness and surface strength, must be free of cracks, be clean and dry.

ATTENTION: The adhesive manufacturer´s instructions for application must be carefully observed!

The adhesive is applied using an appropriate adhesive spreader (according to manufacturer´s instructions). Make sure that the adhesive is spread evenly and keep the surface clean. If a water-soluble adhesive is used, ensure not to apply too much of it.

Important tips for installation:

  1. Protect the packs from damp during storage and avoid extreme temperatures. Do not open until shortly before installation.
  2. Set out the centre lines of the installation area (if the wall is not straight, fit the first plank on the long side and cut to size).
  3. Install the first plank with groove to the wall at a distance of 10-15 mm (secure wall space lengthwise and at the end with wedges!).
  4. By maintaining a healthy room climate (20-22 °C and 40-50 % air humidity) it is possible to avoid formation of gaps and/or swelling.
  5. Exposure to strong sunlight can lead to a natural change in the colour of the wood.
  6. During installation the temperature in the room and the temperature of the material should not be below 14 °C.
  7. The tongue/groove joint is not glued. Sometimes adhesive is pressed upwards and this must be immediately removed with damp cloth!
  8. Please use the tapping block on the tongue, not on the top layer, in order to avoid chipping.

3-layer and 2-layer floors on underfloor heating

Preparatory measures for installation of parquet on heated screeds:
The screed must always be pre-heated before beginning installation work (even in summer). The same applies to refurbishing in old buildings when installing on old screed on which other floor coverings have previously been installed.

A record of the initial thermal cycling must be supplied by the heating engineer.

A screed surface temperature of approx. 15-18 °C is required for installation. On completion of the installation work, this temperature must be held constant for three days (to allow the adhesive to harden).

A primer must be applied according to the manufacturer´s guidelines to screed laid during construction to the applicable standards. For gluing to screed use commercial-grade, non-slip adhesives and primers that are described by the manufacturer as “suitable for underfloor heating”. It is the installer´s duty to check the surface temperature, to install a temperature indicator in an exposed position and to record the results.

Due to the technical properties of the natural product wood and the conditions of the room climate during the heating period, gaps may occur. In general, these are evenly distributed, do not rate as defects, and must be tolerated.

When the heating is switched on for the first time, and at the beginning of every season when heating is in use, increase the heat only gradually! We recommend reducing the surface temperature before cleaning the wooden floor. With a room temperature of 21 °C the floor´s surface temperature should be at a maximum of 27 °C.

Cracks may form more frequently under carpets or under furnishing that stands directly on the wooden floor due to the higher temperature of the surface.

Typical values for thermal resistance are:
10 mm conifer floors 0,08 m² K/W²
10 mm hardwood floors 0,10 m² K/W²
16 mm conifer floors 0,11 m² K/W²
16 mm hardwood floors 0,13 m² K/W²
19 mm hardwood floors 0,16 m² K/W²
21 mm conifer floors 0,16 m² K/W²

Please take into consideration:
For sufficient heat transmission to the room the thermal resistance should not be higher than 0,15 m² K/W². The insulating underlay should also be considered (e.g. rubber cork mat 2 mm = 0,025 m² K/W²).

Instruction for care

How often should an Old Oak oiled wood floor be cleaned?

Re-oil immediately after installation: 1 litre oil for approx. 40-50 m²

Safety precaution: Do not forget to remove cloths, fleece, sheep´s wool pads etc. that are soaked in oil. Soak them in water immediately and hang to dry outdoors. SELF-INFLAMMABLE!! KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN. MAY NOT ENTER THE SEWAGE SYSTEM.

Every Old Oak natural wood floor (except lye-treated and white oiled) has to be re-polished with Wood Floor Oil or Professional Oil after installation. Spray a thin layer of oil with the spray can and polish immediately with a white pad.Then dry polish with a sheep's wool pad or a white pad. The floor can be walked on carefully after 24 hours. Please do not wipe for 10-14 days to give the oil time to harden.

During the first month the floor should be treated once a week with soap solution to permit the protective care substances to build up and make the floor easier to care for. After that the floor should be wiped as required:

When the floor is dirty
When the floor looks dry (the soap dosage can be slightly increased)

Otherwise the floor needs to be only vacuumed or polished now and again with a sheep´s wool pad, polishing mop of sheep´s wool or polishing machine, or quite simply slip into sheep´s wool slippers and polish with every step, that´s not only good for your feet but for your floor, too.

Wiping procedure: we recommend working with 2 buckets:
1 bucket with soap solution ( 5 litres of warm water + 1/8 litre of soap)
1 bucket with clear water that is used to rinse the soiled mop (change the water frequently)
This prevents dirt from being transferred to the soapy water.

Do NOT wipe with clear water – this removes protective fats!

DO NOT USE MICROFIBRE FLOOR CLOTHS OR MOPS FOR WIPING! This can make the wood surface rough!

Make sure that the soap solution foams slightly on the floor during wiping, otherwise increase the amount of soap.

Pamper your wooden floor with every soap treatment – and it will reward you with its beauty!

To maintain the value of Old Oak natural wood floors it is essential to use Wood Floor Soap and/or the Care Set that have been created for the Old Oak surface. During the cold months the soap can thicken due to its high oil content, as we use pure, natural raw materials only). At room temperature this liquefies again (e.g. like honey). This does no harm to the soap.

3-layer floors

Conifer planks: can be treated with water
Hardwood planks: require damp treatment
Volcano planks: require damp treatment only when necessary

Dust can be seen more easily on dark floors. TIP: Polish now and again with sheep´s wool. This picks up the dust and the fats contained in the wool (lanoline) give a beautiful lustre. Protect dark floors from intense UV exposure to avoid lightening of the floor.

2-layer floors

Heating period: During this period the floor may look dry due to lack of humidity. Please wipe immediately with an increased amount of soap, this will give back essential fats to the floor.

Before wiping floors on underfloor heating reduce the temperature if possible. If the floor´s surface is very warm (e.g. immediately next to a tiled stove), do not damp wipe as this will remove essential fats from the floor and may cause stress cracks.

The floor´s surface temperature shouldn't exceed a maximum of +27 °C!!! Stress cracks may occur.

To maintain the value of your oiled wood floor, a relative humidity of 40-50 % at a room temperature of 21 °C is necessary!
